HISTORY - ALL IN THE FAMILY
After the Second World War, a thirty year old articled clerk, Keith Cochrane, working for the chartered accountant firm Newton & Co, accepted a partnership position, changing the name of the firm to Newton Cochrane & Co. Thus in 1945 the origins of the firm that is now called Wilson Porter & Associates began its journey.
On the death of the original partner, Eric Newton in 1948 two accountants working for the firm, Alan Wilson and Gordon Neal came on board as partners with Keith. Through the years the firm grew with their expertise focussed on financial reporting, audit and tax, reflecting the financial needs of the times.
1981 saw the firm passed on to Colin, Alan’s son and Ian Porter, the son of a golfing friend of Alan’s, changing the name to Wilson Porter.
Once again Wilson Porter successfully grew through the years adding other areas of expertise, such as business development and managerial support to assist their clients not
only with compliance issues but helping them grow and strengthen their businesses.
During a ski holiday in 1997, Ian was closely involved with the Thredbo landslide. Looking back, this may have been a bad omen as Ian contracted an aggressive cancer and sadly passed away in January, 1998.
This heralded a very difficult period for Colin, to consolidate and take-over the management of Ian’s clients, but through tenacity and hard work re-designed the firm to continue the service level that our client’s have grown to expect from Wilson Porter.
On the 1st of September, 2009, Simone Davis (Colin’s niece) and David Cochrane (Keith’s son), have taken over the firm from Colin. Although, many events have happened and the times have changed since 1945, two things have stayed in place; the focus on building an alliance with our client’s to support them in their endeavours and the close team relationship that is reflected in the fact that half our current personnel have been a part of Wilson Porter for well over ten years.
